Tarahumara Drum               Heart Drum in Cave

KEEPER OF THE BEAT

Barbara Borden’s Journey to Becoming a Beat-Keeper

February 28, 1992---a 1500 person drum circle---I played one beat on a huge, heart-shaped drum that brought me to tears.  I was Home.  After searching for six years, I found B.J. Quintana, the woman who made that drum.  She agreed to make a similar drum for me.  At the same time she gifted me with a sixty-five year-old medicine drum made by the Tarahumara people of Northern Mexico.  This was a great honor, blessing and teaching about the movement of drums.  Fifteen months later, on August 15, 2000---after raising $3500 and all the elements necessary to make this drum---the Heart Drum was born.  Since then, the Heart Drum has traveled to many places and has been part of a vast array of events and ceremonies to help keep the heartbeat of the community alive and well.

On the weekend of July 21, 2006, I met Susie Hawk at a multicultural women’s drum camp. When she saw and heard the Heart Drum she was moved to tears.  Since I had learned about the movement of drums from B.J. and the gift of the Tarahumara drum, I realized that the next right place for The Heart Drum was to be with Susie and her people on the Suquamish Reservation, Bainbridge Island, WA.  On December 27, 2006, I will deliver The Heart Drum to Susie Hawk and her people on Bainbridge Island, WA.  As I said to Susie,  “I do not feel that I am losing a drum but that I am gaining new friends.”  Susie has told me that the primary beat-keepers of the Heart Drum will be women.  The drum will be an integral part of the community’s annual Sundance Ceremony.

The transfer of the Heart Drum will be video taped for a documentary film now in progress, Keeper of the Beat.”  Keeper is about one woman’s journey to becoming a keeper of the beat.  The film traces the movement and rhythms of Borden’s life that bring her closer to her ancestors, the earth and the sacred feminine.  Also included will be interviews with other women drummers, beat-keepers, artists, mentors and magicians from Hawaii to Siberia.  Stories will unfold through the language of the drum, song and the spoken word.

Seed money is $14,300.  $3,300 has been raised. Help us to our goal of $11,000 by 2/28/07.

Traveling Jewish Theatre presents…

ROSE by Martin Sherman
featuring TJT co-founder, Naomi Newman
Directed by Joan Mankin

January 4 - February 25, 2007

San Francisco - Mountain View - Berkeley

This one-woman play takes the audience on a restless journey through 20th century Jewish life.  Written by playwright Martin Sherman, who is best-known for his award-winning play, Bent and the recent film, Mrs. Henderson Presents.  His fully-blossomed Rose is a story-teller, born in a Ukrainian shtetl, she survives the Warsaw ghetto and the refugee ship, Exodus.  Her journey continues through the fading glitz of Atlantic City, a hippie commune in Connecticut, an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, and finally ends up as a thrice-widowed grandmother in Miami Beach, entrancing us with her vivid images, searing observations and wit.  This one-woman, tour-de-force erases the lines between the personal, the historical and the political - as well as between the heart-wrenching and the hilarious.
